The Chapel Choir is an important part of college tradition, and it would be lovely to see you adding to it during your time at Jesus.

The Choir is open to all members of the College, both postgraduates and undergraduate, and interested singers from other colleges are invited to contact the Organ Scholar, Charlotte Orr. The main focus of the Choir is the Sunday Evening service, which takes the form of Evensong. A religious service, it provides us with an opportunity to sing a large range of music, and time to socialise with those in other years. The Choir is run by the two Organ Scholars, Charlotte Orr and Alexandra Middleditch.

There are also special services throughout the year. In Michaelmas we sing at a candlelit service of Lessons and Carols for Advent which is always packed to the rafters. Hilary Term is very busy and includes the St David’s Day service sung in Welsh, and the Turl Street Arts Festival Evensong when we join forces with the choirs of Exeter and Lincoln Colleges. Finally, in Trinity Term, there is the Service for the Commemoration of Benefactors and, for the early risers, the annual tradition of singing madrigals early on May Day morning, with strawberries and champagne!

Other than the joy of singing, there are many rewards of singing in the Choir! Tea and cakes are served before the service on Sundays and, afterwards, there is sherry and Formal Hall, free of charge. The College also provides free singing tuition for all members of the Choir, currently with David Crown.

A further highlight of the calendar is the annual Choir tour. Held during the summer vacation, it gives us a chance to sing outside of the College and really become a strong choir unit. Do have a look at the Choir Tours page for more information, or contact the Organ Scholars directly.

I look forward to meeting you all soon.

Joining the Choir

The College Chapel Choir helps to lead worship for Sunday Evensong. It rehearses 4.30 pm-6.00 pm on Thursday afternoons and 4.00 pm-5.15 pm on Sundays before Evensong. We often have masterclasses with eminent church musicians as well as regular singing lessons offered to all members of the choir. New members are always welcome and should contact Charlotte Orr

Organ Scholar Profiles

Charlotte Orr is the Senior Organ Scholar at Jesus College.  She is currently in her third year reading Music.  She has thoroughly enjoyed her first two years as an organ scholar, and being part of Jesus’s vibrant chapel community.  Favourite memories of last year include accompanying a performance of Fauré’s Requiem, and undertaking a sponsored Psalm-a-thon, which involved the choir singing through the entire psalter in a day! She has especially enjoyed travelling with the choir on tour abroad, including organising a trip to Hong Kong and Shanghai this year, and joining the choir on tour in Cologne and Bonn before she’d even finished school!

As well as a Grade 8 Distinction on the Organ (within a year of taking it up), she has achieved Grade 8 Distinctions on the Piano and French horn.  At school she enjoyed playing in 7 orchestras, bands and ensembles and continues to play the French horn in her spare time.  She is currently a member of the Oxford University Philharmonic Orchestra and Oxford University Wind Orchestra, where she is Librarian, and also plays for other college events across the University.  In addition, she accompanies the Oxford Youth Girls’ Choir, and is a member of Turl Street Homeless Action.
