I came to Jesus College mainly due to the high recommendations it received from several former students, and I am very happy about my choice. My life at Jesus College has turned out to be even better than I expected!

As an engineering student working in the Zoology Department on a physics project, but very interested in history, politics and music, I have been able at Jesus College to meet people from various academic backgrounds and with totally different personal interests. The College symposia with renowned speakers and the Middle (Graduate) Common Room (MCR) speaker events with a huge variety of topics are very interesting to me. Also, Jesus College provides many scholarships, prizes and funding for students, from which I benefit to go to enable me to go to conferences and on field trips.

College life in Jesus is charming. Every day can be busy as the MCR provides a lot of social activities, including film nights, brunches, exchange dinners and balls etc. The black-tie end-of-term dinner is my favourite. If you like sports, the College also has its own sport fields and squash courts. And badminton night is also perfect for me. I have also been paid by the College for invigilating the Colleges’ undergraduates’ exams.

In contrast to my previous University in the UK where I studied for my Master’s degree, Jesus College offers three meals every day at reasonable prices during term time, which saves me time. Also, as accommodation is normally provided for three years, you do not need to worry about finding a place to live.

From my personal experience, I would particularly recommend Chinese students come to the University of Oxford and Jesus College in particular, as I found people and support staff here are more friendly and helpful compared to those in Chinese universities!

My experiences at Jesus College have greatly exceeded the already high expectations I had before arriving in Oxford. Jesus was strongly recommended to me by friends mainly due to its intermediate size, highly cosmopolitan MCR and generous funding. These three attributes are just of a few of the many reasons I feel this is one of the best colleges in Oxford.

The centrality of the College and Ship Street accommodation greatly enhances your Oxford experience as well as making life very convenient with just a few minutes’ walk to a number of libraries, parks, restaurants and pubs.

The size and spirit of the MCR is one of the best attributes of the college. Roughly 60% of the graduates are international students creating a melting pot of characters and cultures. The spirit of the MCR is enhanced by the wide range of sporting and cultural activities available.

Then of course, the generous funding. Jesus places great value on its graduates travelling to international conferences. To this end they offer a very healthy travel allowance of £782 per annum, which is very rare amongst other colleges. Furthermore, they offer a number of scholarships every year including the Graduate scholarship which includes £850 and ‘High Table’ dining-rights.

The students at Jesus College are a very friendly, down-to-earth and highly talented group of people. This creates a wonderful social dynamic which is coupled with the College offering all the cultural, sporting and academic opportunities one could ask for. You needn't think any further on your College decision if these are the characteristics you seek.

Jonathan Lipps

College life is a big part of your time at Oxford, and sets the tone for a lot of your experiences here. As an international student, I wasn't quite sure what this meant before I arrived, but at Jesus I soon learned about the place of the college in my graduate program. Pretty much every aspect of my time at Oxford, apart from my academic instruction, involves Jesus in some way or another. From providing me with housing, to giving me the option of eating all three meals in Hall, to supporting the Middle Common Room (MCR) in its social endeavors, Jesus has been my constant companion (don't worry - after a while you don't even hear the "Jesus" puns anymore). I'm very glad I was offered a place here, and chose to accept it.

The College is, as you probably know, very centrally located. To be honest, I can't think of a college with a better location, situated as it is right near Cornmarket St, with all of downtown a few blocks to every side; of course, being in the middle of all the pubs, cafés, and shops does tempt the wallet. More importantly than location, Jesus is a very friendly college. I haven't been able to find any trace of snobbery in the students or the staff, and people seem genuinely good-natured and excited to have a quick chat when crossing paths in the MCR. This of course leads to a heightened fun-factor at all the parties, gatherings, trips to the pub, and so on...  The MCR does a great job of consistently putting on events throughout term that are a welcome break from the stresses of tutorials. Pub quizzes, movie nights, wine and cheese soirées, organized trips to shows and concerts, etc... Whatever your style of fun, you'll be well looked after.

I should also say that, academically, Jesus is top-notch. While your day-to-day academic experience as a graduate student won't revolve around your college, it's always interesting to speak to Fellows when special dinners or other occasions permit. The Principal makes it his business to know a little bit about everything, and he'll surprise you with what a good conversationalist he is on a wide variety of topics unrelated to his own field.

In sum, Jesus takes its job of providing you with all the support, academic and otherwise, that you'll need during your time at Oxford very seriously indeed. Having been here for a year now, and having explored many of the other colleges, I have no regrets whatsoever about having chosen to spend my time here, and I'll always be proud to be a member of Jesus!

I think the main aspect that distinguishes Oxford from my undergraduate university (Georgetown University in Washington DC) is the college system. I had learnt a lot about the academics of Oxford before applying but I remember filling out the application and putting a random college name on it because I did not understand the system. I wasn't sure what the college was for, what it would provide for me and mostly what the link between my college and my department was.

In the end I got a letter from Jesus College as well as the Graduate Handbook and other information, and started looking through it. I was able to figure things out as they came my way. The porters in the lodge and the MCR [Middle Common Room, formerly known as the Graduate Common Room] committee definitely made the first approach very easy and agreeable. I then discovered that all the college staff were incredibly helpful and felt comfortable going to offices and asking about all sorts of things.

As things moved along, I realised that the College was what would keep me sane and happy. After a day in the department talking and breathing economics, it was incredibly refreshing to come home to Jesus College where people read a wide variety of subjects. It was important for me to come back from the library for dinner in hall and know there would be a whole table of familiar faces that I could talk to and relax with. The community is welcoming and social. I had no trouble finding amazing people from all around the world, all with fascinating backgrounds and interests. An active graduate community is something that can be considered rare in Oxford and Jesus is definitely one of the best. It's small and personal yet varied and fun and I've had an amazing two years here.

In terms of the opportunities in College, I've found that staff in College are good listeners and very willing to accept suggestions for change. One example of it is the development of more interaction between junior and senior members of the College so that the intellectual community of the College is unified and grows on both sides through those interactions.

Basically Jesus College does not just provide a student with accommodation and food, it is the source of a fun group to socialise with, a great intellectual community and support in all areas, whether it be academic, welfare or financial.

I chose to study in Oxford because of its reputation in philosophy. The graduates here are really quite talented, and I was very pleased by the amount of time my supervisors took to discuss my work with them.

In The Netherlands, where I did my first degree, one can easily feel alone at university. Not so in Oxford, and especially not in Jesus College. Jesus College and its MCR [Middle Common Room, formerly known as the Graduate Common Room] have, from the very start, organized an incredible number of dinners, parties and other events to make me feel at home and get to know other people. In practical matters, I found Jesus College’s personnel friendly and helpful. For the most part, they show remarkable patience and readiness to assist.

During my master's program, I have lived both in Ship Street [next door to the main college site] and at Herbert Close [the college's flats in East Oxford]. Ship Street is attractive because of its location in the heart of the city. But I found the graduate accommodation at Herbert Close particularly good. It consists of spacious flats with bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen. The cost of rent is somewhat higher than in some places in Holland, but it is not unusual to pay comparable amounts in Amsterdam or Utrecht.

Before I came, my picture of Oxford was of a place where success and competition was in the forefront of everyone's mind. I thought it would be stuffy, and full of overeager students. I was proved wrong in this respect. Oxford, like other universities, is just full of different people. There is something to be found here for almost any taste.

Being an international student, I can personally say that I was rather anxious about how life was going to be in a foreign land like Oxford. There was a point when I began questioning my choice in going to Jesus College despite reading and hearing about how it is one of the friendliest colleges there is. The uneasy feelings quickly evaporated as I stepped foot into the College and was received with great warmth. The College is one of the most closely-knit in Oxford, so despite being a student coming from a different part of the world, cultural differences were never obstacles to face. A simple smile or hello is never too far away, every time I enter the JCR (Junior Common Room) or walk through the beautiful quads. Needless to say, making friends is probably one of the easiest things to do here.

Another thing that I find particularly convenient about the College is the centrality of its location in town. Practically anything and everything can be found within minutes from College, be it restaurants, pubs, department stores, or even banks!

Jesus College also has some of the finest tutors. They never hesitate in giving me a helping hand whenever I am faced with problems dealing with work or even personal problems, which is always reassuring when times get tough.

One final thing that I am very impressed with is how we, as undergraduates in Jesus College, have accommodation throughout our entire course. This greatly reduces the burden in finding a place to stay, which can definitely be very annoying!

Lastly, I would really like to say that life at university can be difficult if you want it to be, but grab the opportunities presented and it will be one of the most if not the most fulfilling and enriching experiences of your life. Having spent two terms in College so far, I've had a blast and I can genuinely see that coming to Jesus College will probably be one of the best decisions I've made.

My experience as a student here has been very enjoyable, both at Jesus College and at the University. Coming to Oxford and studying at Jesus College is probably one of the best decisions I have ever made. Jesus College is located in the heart of the city; this means everything you need is just around the corner. As a scientist, the thing I like the most is that the University Science Area is a short walk away. The library is well stocked and is open around the clock, which can be very convenient for those who have an essay due in at 9 am the following morning! In a very rare case, you might need a book from one of the university libraries. With over 30 libraries spread over the city of Oxford, you can usually be sure of finding the book you need. If you are a sports person, the College also has its own sport field, fairly near the University Sport Centre.

Right from the beginning of my application, the College has been very informative on the course structure and the role the College would be playing in my studies. One of the advantages of studying at Jesus is the generous student welfare support provided by the College. The College has a range of various and very generous grants and prizes as well as scholarships and awards available. The College also provides accommodation to all of its students throughout their study, which saves us from the hassle of flat-hunting.

The student community at Jesus is close-knit, friendly and easy-going. Studying at Oxford also means that you have a chance to meet people from different countries. The University also organises an International Student Orientation Programme to help international students to settle down at the very beginning of their stay in Oxford.

Choosing a college is quite a time-demanding task, especially for an international applicant who still has to decide between many universities. Therefore, I'm going to summarise the main advantages of Jesus College in the following bullet-points:

  • Location. Jesus College is situated in the city centre near the Science Area, shops and quite near the sports grounds, which is very convenient.
  • Jesus College staff are indeed very helpful and friendly. Being an international student means that sometimes you have to visit several different members of staff, for example to get to grips with the Student Loan Company. I had quite a few problems getting started, but found college staff very helpful.
  • Quality of Education. Most of you are thinking of going to Oxford in order to study at one of the best universities in the world. The subject that I study - Physics - has a reputation for being taught at the highest level at Jesus College.
  •  Nice atmosphere. During your studies you want not only to learn but also to attend great parties and have a good social life. This aspect is assured at Jesus College. As the College is not too big, you will feel a family atmosphere, that will absorb international students who are frightened by a new land. It's also good to remember that we have a nice college bar, where each evening you can drop in and be most welcome, with a juke-box which performs your favourite CDs chosen by you. Here, you'll have great parties ("Bops") and an active social life.
  • Free swimming pool and gym cards. Although you might think that it is just a difference of about 100 pounds a year (which for some international students is quite a lot), in fact, it is much more than that. Just because a lot of people can go to the University gym, we tend to organise morning training or afternoon swimming, which I really enjoy.
  •  Food. Furthermore, the food served in our hall is of a good quality and our college living expenses are considerably lower than in other colleges.

To end this advertisement, I can say, remember that: Jesus loves You :)

I want to add that I'm a Fahrenheit scholarship holder, and that great costs of my studies are sponsored by the President of the City of Gdansk.

„Bops”.

Pamiętajcie: Jesus loves You :)

Being an international student, I was rather anxious about studying in Oxford, especially about living in College. I had my interview in Singapore where I sat my A-Levels, and by the time I arrived in October 2009, I was quite nervous and excited about my first ever trip to Oxford. Jesus College is known for its close-knit, friendly atmosphere, and I can proudly say, I was not disappointed. The College assisted us with settling in and the Freshers’ Committee (the group of students who organise events for new students) made every effort to integrate the first-years. Personally, I felt deeply attached to Jesus College when I had an accident over the Christmas vacation, and the College provided me with a lot of support in the form of adjusting my College examination timetable, providing me with alternative suitable accommodation, seeking guidance from the college nurse and more.

Teaching at Oxford, needless to say, is a wonderful experience. Jesus College has some of the finest tutors who never hesitate in committing extra time to answer my queries or help me.

Jesus College is right at the heart of the city, and thus a very convenient place to live in. After a day in the library living and breathing economics, it is incredibly refreshing to come home to Jesus College where people read a wide variety of subjects. Long conversations over dinner in the Hall are always a pleasant experience, made even better by the quality food provided (with a multitude of vegetarian options and salads). I have found that free access to the gym, squash courts and swimming pools make my weekends much more exciting! What I feel is great about Jesus is that undergraduates are provided accommodation for the entire duration of their course, which relieves the stress of looking for accommodation.

Lastly, I would like to say that Jesus College provides a plethora of opportunities for the holistic development of its student: grab these opportunities and university life will be one of the most, if not the most, fulfilling and enriching experiences of your life. Having spent almost three terms in College so far, I have had a blast and I can genuinely say that coming to Jesus College will probably be one of the best decisions I have made.

I chose to study at Oxford because of its reputation in medicine, ranked 1st in both "The Times Good University Guide 2010" and "The Guardian University Guide 2010". Located in the center of town, Jesus College is not only conveniently located near banks, shops, and restaurants, but also the university science area where lectures and labs take place. Jesus College also contains a well-stocked library open 24/7 and hosts various speaker events. Most importantly, our college tutors are always willing to take time to help us out with any work-related or even personal problems during tough times, through e-mail, phone, or extra tutorials.

Jesus College is also unique in that it offers guaranteed accommodation at affordable prices for the entire duration of your course, eliminating the headache of flat-hunting year after year! Furthermore, the college offers 3 meals a day with both meat and vegetarian options, saving you time. Free gym membership including access to the pool and squash courts, along with events organized by the JCR (Junior Common Room) complete the college experience. Lastly, university-wide clubs (e.g. Salsa Society) allows you to pursue any hobbies and as an international student, connect with people from your home country (e.g. Oxford University Hong Kong Society).

It is for these reasons I recommend Jesus College to you.

The Times Good University Guide 2010 和The Guardian University Guide 2010 排名為修讀醫科的最佳學府。

Jesus College.
