Studied at University College London as an undergraduate and a postgraduate student, and postgraduate teacher training at the Institute of Education, University of London. Worked as a curator in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the British Museum. Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.

The art of Mesopotamia, particularly representations of the supernatural world, and the transmission and adoption of artistic forms across the Near East; Neo-Assyrian reliefs and stamp seals; the history of collecting.
