Academic Background
Shahpur Patell graduated summa cum laude as Bachelor of Science in Engineering Sciences at the University of Edinburgh in 1974. His thesis on "Macroporous Ion Exchangers" earned him the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge in 1977.
Shahpur Patell is an Old Member of Pembroke College, Cambridge; a Chartered European Engineer; Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers; a Chartered Scientist and a Freeman of the City of London.

Role
The Home Bursar has responsibility for the overall domestic administration and services of the College and management of a team of staff. He is also the College's "Responsible Person" to the Health and Safety Executive, the Fire and other Emergency Services and the Environmental Health Agency.
From the perspectives of students and Fellows, the Home Bursar's management of accommodation and catering is a significant point of contact. He shares responsibility for Members' welfare within the College's support network.
The Bursary Team manages conference letting of the College premises.
He also works closely with other Bursars to ensure effective collaboration between Colleges.
