Mr Michael Waul
Academic Background
Michael graduated summa cum laude as Bachelor of Arts with majors in Biology and Chemistry, and a minor in Geography, from Macalester College, USA. He is a Rhodes Scholar reading for a DPhil in Organic Chemistry, and will attend Harvard Medical School when his current studies draw to a close.
Research Interests
Current work focuses on the synthesis of amino-sugars as agents for potential stem cell interactions.
Other Interests
Michael spends much of his free time conducting volunteer activities. He is President of the Rhodes Scholars’ Southern African Forum, an organisation which raises and distributes funds to support small-scale community development projects in Sub-Saharan Africa. He writes for The Gleaner, a news publication in his native Jamaica, and enjoys cooking and good music. His favourite sports are tennis and cricket.
Michael is particularly excited to be working in Jesus College, as it is the alma mater of his countryman, former Prime Minister Norman Manley.
Role of the Junior Dean
As Junior Dean, Michael holds dual responsibility for students’ non-academic discipline and welfare, and also serves on a number of College committees. He acts as a liaison between the student body and the administration, and encourages students to contact him with any and all of their concerns – he is happy to provide assistance or refer to other College officers who are better able to help.
