Professor Richard Bosworth

BA, MA Hons Sydney, PhD Cambridge, FAHA, FASSA Senior Research Fellow in History richard.bosworth@uwa.edu.au

Academic Background

I did my first undergraduate and MA work at the University of Sydney, then a PhD at Cambridge (St John’s College). I taught at Sydney from 1969 to 1986 and then at UWA 1987 until my retirement in 2011. From 2007 I was also professor at Reading. I am to be an emeritus in both places. I am a Fellow of both the Australian Academy of Social Sciences and of the Humanities. My two Mussolini books won five of Australia’s literary and historical prizes and were shortlisted for five others.

Research Interests

My latest book, Whispering City: Rome and Its Histories came out with Yale UP in 2011. I am now working on three major projects (i) as co-editor of vol II of the new Cambridge History of the Second World War (ii) a history of Italian Venice since 1866 (iii) a book potentially to be entitled Sex and the Italian dictator about Mussolini’s relationship with his 'last lover', Clara Petacci.

Other Interests

I play golf (member of North Oxford GC) and have two granddaughters in Oxford.
