The opening of the Westgate Centre, and with it the relocation of some of our retail tenants, has provided Jesus College with an opportunity to explore the potential for a redevelopment of Northgate House. With all the remaining leases set to expire, a decision has been made to develop proposals which will meet the College’s recently announced academic strategy for 2017 - 2021.

The Northgate House site offers a unique opportunity to expand the College’s central site through a new building which properly respects the historic setting of the College in a conservation area and enhances the appearance of, and journey along, Market Street at the same time. Our proposals will retain significant retail accommodation at basement, ground and first floor levels fronting Cornmarket Street and Market Street, while adding residential accommodation, primarily for postgraduate students, a digital hub, space for learning resources and significant teaching facilities opposite the Fellows’ Library. A new access into the College will be formed from Market Street.

We have had extensive discussions with key stakeholders and intend to lodge a planning application with Oxford City Council in January 2018. Consent will enable us to start looking for a suitable contractor and hopefully to start the redevelopment in the foreseeable future.
