As we embark on an exciting new academic year, I would like to offer a warm welcome to all students joining us at Jesus College for the first time, and welcome back those returning.
I would also like to thank our team who have been with us over the summer, working behind the scenes and preparing for the year ahead.
It’s wonderful to have you all at College and we look forward to the adventures to come. We pride ourselves on being a truly diverse, national and international College. Based right in the heart of the city, we are lucky to enjoy all that Oxford has to offer, whilst also feeling at home in the beautiful surroundings of Jesus College.
Over the coming months, we have lots to look forward to. Exciting plans are in the pipeline for our state-of-the-art Northgate House development which will be a fantastic addition to the College. We are currently working with architects and a range of external bodies to develop our plans for this transformational project.
We have many wonderful events taking place for you to enjoy, including the inaugural Wilson lecture at the Sheldonian which will take place at the end of November. More information on this will be available soon. Our Fellows will be continuing their inspirational research programmes into an array of extraordinary subjects, ranging from the weather on exoplanets to designing drones based on an understanding of the mechanisms of flight in birds and insects, and the continuing restoration and recreation of music from Ancient Greece, unheard for thousands of years.
We want our students to enjoy all that university can offer, whilst at the same time, preparing for life beyond Jesus College. In today’s competitive world, we want our students to be in the best possible position to develop their minds, their talents and their sense of self. We want to ensure that our students enjoy their chosen subjects and retain a sense of passion for learning and critical enquiry.
We also want our students to be happy, and as such, we place welfare high on our agenda. We have a dedicated and experienced welfare committee on hand to help if required, and Welfare Fellow, Dr Stephen Morris runs an open door session on a Wednesday for students to drop by with any concerns.
I look forward to another successful and stimulating year at College for us all. For those joining, thank you for choosing us and welcome to Jesus College 2017/18.
Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt FRS FREng, Principal.
