Before the second lockdown, our JCR and MCR Presidents and their Vice-Presidents got the opportunity to visit the Northgate construction site, to get a first look at this transformational development and the facilities that future students will be able to enjoy.
Lucy Zhang (JCR President), Isobel Patterson (MCR President), Olly Hartopp (JCR VP) and Lisa Zillig (MCR VP) were taken on the tour by BAM Project Manager Alec Carr (pictured below with the student group).
Northgate is due to open in autumn 2021 and will mark Jesus College’s 450th anniversary. The new development will provide the College with teaching facilities, indoor and outdoor communal spaces, postgraduate accommodation, a café and exhibition space.
At the heart of the development will be College’s Digital Hub - a flexible, open and collaborative space that will use state-of-the-art digital streaming technologies to transform our teaching, learning and global research.
Olly says, “It was amazing to see – especially having seen the original designs and then being able to come and see the amount of work that’s been done so quickly.”
Isobel says, “The ‘WOW’ moment was definitely walking up to the highest floor at the moment, which is the postgrad rooms. As a postgraduate student, it going to be so lovely to have those views of Oxford. I think they’re unseen views before from Cornmarket so it’s going to be really nice.”
Lucy was excited to see the Digital Hub taking shape, saying she was impressed with “the design of the spiral staircase and also the size of it and all the teaching rooms. I think it’s a really amazing space for students and the College as well.”
Isobel adds, “I think everyone’s going to be very envious of Jesus College. We’ve got a superb Digital hub coming, and an extra quad – I think it’s going to make the College a very desirable place to be a student.”
