We have produced a new film – Northgate: Shaping the Future of Learning and Interdisciplinary Research - about our ambitious Northgate development in Oxford city centre, to mark the first twelve months of the building’s construction.
The three-minute film sets out our vision for Northgate and includes timelapse footage of the demolition of the existing Northgate House (on the corner of Cornmarket and Market Street) and the transformation of the site over the past few months.
Northgate is due to open in autumn 2021 and will mark Jesus College’s 450th anniversary. The new development will provide us with stunning new teaching facilities, indoor and outdoor communal spaces, postgraduate accommodation, a café and exhibition space.
At the heart of the development is the College’s Digital Hub. The Hub is a flexible, open and collaborative space that will use state-of-the-art digital streaming technologies to transform learning and research. Building on the experience of the accelerated move towards digital streaming during the current pandemic, technology will go hand-in-hand with tradition to enhance Jesus students’ learning experience, promote knowledge transfer across global institutions, research groups and time zones, and showcase the wealth of interdisciplinary, world-leading research undertaken by College academics in fields as broad as climate change science, developmental biology and international history.
Utilising the Hub’s flexible technologies, we'll be able to support a range of activities for public audiences such as interactive performances, films, talks and exhibitions, and increase the reach and impact of our successful access and outreach work. Our Principal, Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt, says:
"With this new development, we are not just embracing the future of learning, we are shaping it. Northgate will enable us to be a more open, agile, inclusive and integrated College; a College that respects tradition but is positioned firmly at the forefront of learning and research in the 21st Century."
"This new film explains our vision for Northgate and reveals the rapid transformation of this historic corner of Oxford over the past year. We are very fortunate that work has been able to continue safely in recent months and the building is now emerging from behind and above the hoardings, for all to see."
The Northgate development was designed by MICA Architects and is being built by BAM. The timelapse film will continue to be updated and shared as the project progresses.
