Biodiversity

We are committed to enhancing biodiversity, and ensuring that we create and preserve wildlife-friendly habitats across the College’s Oxford estate.

Although the College is located in the heart of the city, planting on our main Turl Street provides a wide range of flora for bird and insect species to enjoy throughout the year. We also welcome a pair of ducks who build their nest in our shrubbery every year.

We undertake gardening and maintenance work using environmentally and animal/insect-friendly products and practises, and are gradually moving from petrol-powered mowers and other equipment to electric-powered machinery.

At our Steven’s Close site we are working to make the grounds more environmentally sustainable and wildlife-friendly. This work includes installing bird boxes and the protection of a badger’s sett, which is in use.

At our Herbert Close site, a wide range of eco-friendly and environmentally-sustainable initiatives have been introduced, led by our Groundsman David Mead. Read more about these initiatives here.

Our students also keenly participate in activities that aim to enhance biodiversity.
