Cheese shop opens in College’s Ship Street retail space

11 November 2021

The Jericho Cheese Company has launched its new cheese shop in one of Jesus College’s Ship Street retail units.

The company, which already has a shop on Little Clarendon Street in Jericho, opened the stylish new store this week due to growing demand for its selection of quality British and Irish cheeses.  Cheesemonger Adam Verlander, who founded the original shop, has been keen to open a second site in a more central location for some time. He says, “We had actually started looking for a second site before COVID-19 hit. We were growing up, we had established ourselves. It seemed logical to investigate the idea of something more central.”

The new Jericho Cheese Shop on Ship Street

The new cheese shop is located in part of a larger retail unit that was once home to the Russell & Bromley shoe shop. The site has been split into smaller units to open up the potential market to small-scale, independent stores. Hairdresser Matthew Clulee is also a tenant.  Adam says, “A small company like ours couldn’t have afforded – and didn’t need – a large unit. By making the space smaller, it has automatically made it more affordable and manageable. Ship Street is a small lane, but it’s just off the main street, so it’s very close to people working, visiting and so on, who might be minded to purchase some quality food.”

The new shop, at 7 St Michael’s Mansions, Ship Street, is open five days a week:

Tuesday to Thursday – 9am – 5pm
Friday & Saturday – 9am – 6pm
