The School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE), in partnership with Jesus College and supported by the generosity of Geography alumni Bradley Wilson (1967) and Rodney Wright (1962), is delighted to announce a new scholarship  – the Bradley Wilson Scholarship in Geography and the Environment – that will offer one fully-funded Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil/PhD) scholarship for UK Black and Mixed-Black applicants.

SoGE and Jesus College aim to attract and admit students with outstanding academic potential, irrespective of their background or ability to pay. Commitment to equality and diversity are at the heart of the academic missions of both, and the Bradley Wilson Scholarship in Geography and the Environment will reduce barriers to access to a group currently underrepresented in the SoGE doctoral programme.

Professor Patricia Daley, Professor of the Human Geography of Africa at the University of Oxford, and Helen Morag Fellow, Tutor in Geography and Chair of the Equality & Diversity Committee at Jesus College, says; “We are hugely grateful for the generous support of Brad and Rodney in establishing this new scholarship, which creates a fantastic opportunity for doctoral research by a Black or Mixed-Black student.”

Despite recent increases in the uptake in UK Black and Mixed-Black school students taking geography at GCSE level, very few go on to study geography at A’ level and at university, especially for post-graduate degrees. We hope by funding a scholarship at doctoral level we will contribute to producing more role models for young and aspiring Black and Mixed-Black geographers”.

The studentship will cover three years of University tuition fees, along with a maintenance allowance (at standard UKRI rates) and research allowance, and will be available starting in the 2022/23 academic year. Eligible applicants will be ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, and of Black or Mixed-Black background.

Applications are welcome from candidates with a background in Geography or a related social science, physical or environmental discipline in any area of SoGE’s research activity.
