Jesus alumna launches new charity to support teenage girls and women in crisis

9 March 2021

We are proud to share the news of a new charity, the Bexceptional Foundation, which is the brainchild of Jesus College alumna Bex Hall (2010, Geography).

The Bexceptional Foundation exists to empower women and promote their wellbeing and confidence. The Foundation has three goals: to educate women on self-confidence, their rights, and their worth; to protect and support women in difficult relationships or situations; and to empower and enable women to live the life they deserve.

Through educational resources and activities such as confidence courses, career mentoring and events, the charity aims to support empower girls and women to ‘live the life they dream of.’ It is already funding counselling in England for those who have experienced, or are experiencing, sex/gender-related harm. Bex (pictured below) founded the charity after experiencing her own trauma at a young age. She says, “I recognised the gaps in current support structures for women, girls and females who experience gender/sex based trauma, harm or abuse, and in particular the almost complete lack of support for young women or teenage girls who experience harm that is perceived as not ‘serious’ enough to warrant help.”

“We have the deepest respect for the other charities and services working in this area, but also acknowledge that many who are not in a ‘crisis’ situation, or who experienced trauma or abuse in the past are not eligible for support, which can be very damaging for them.”

She added, “Launching a charity during a global pandemic and economic dip may seem mad, but the people we are trying to help need our support now more than ever, as NHS services are stretched to breaking point, and those in abusive situations are likely trapped at home with those doing them harm. I’m really thrilled with how positive the response to the charity has been and the support we’ve received so far; it makes running the charity alongside a full time job totally worth it’.
