Landmark Digital Hub support for a Career Development Fellow

19 October 2020

Jesus College is delighted to announce the creation of a new two-year Career Development Fellowship that will give a young researcher the opportunity to take a leading role in the programming of activities in the College’s new Digital Hub, located within the redevelopment of Northgate.

The Digital Hub (below) is designed to be a flexible space that uses state-of-the-art digital streaming technologies to transform the learning and research experience of the Jesus College academic community. The new facility will also enable us to increase our outreach activities to both the local community and schools across Oxford, England and Wales.

The SOUTHWORKS Digital Hub Career Development Fellow will help curate a broad programme of public and College events hosted in the Hub throughout the academic year, working closely with Senior Fellows and College Officers. They will lead on developing innovative Hub activities which could range from creating digitised versions of the College’s manuscripts and early-printed books, to running online science experiments to engage primary school-aged children.

This exciting position has been made possible thanks to the generosity of Mr Alejandro Jack, Associate Alumnus of Jesus College and Saïd Business School (Diploma in Global Business, 2012) and his business partner Jonathan Halife. In 2004, Mr Jack and Mr Halife started SOUTHWORKS, a UK-based software development firm, with presence in ten countries, that works on high profile digital projects for well-known clients such as Microsoft, Discovery, 7-Elevan and the PGA Tour. Mr Jack was particularly excited by the Hub’s purpose as a centre for learning and knowledge exchange in Oxford which he sees as a natural pairing for SOUTHWORKS.

Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt FRS, Principal of Jesus College, added, “We are thrilled to make this announcement, which marks another milestone in the transformational Northgate project. The Digital Hub is at the heart of our new building and the SOUTHWORKS Career Development Fellow will be instrumental in using their digital research expertise to develop an exciting and innovative programme of events that bring this space to life.”

Recruitment for the new SOUTHWORKS Career Development Fellow will begin in 2021 ahead of the building’s opening.
