John Magorrian obtained his BSc in Applied Maths and Physics from Queen's University, Belfast, and DPhil in Physics from Oxford. He has held postdoctoral positions at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics and at Cambridge. In 2000, he was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship held initially at Durham, but later transferred to Oxford.
