Principal encourages debate around AI regulation

Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt FRS FREng FBCS, Principal of Jesus College, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford and Chair of the Open Data Institute, has been further contributing to the debate on the governance and ethics around artificial intelligence today, following recent news reports of concerns about the direction and speed at which AI is developing.

Sir Nigel, a leading researcher in AI and and Chair of the Steering Committee for the University’s Institute for Ethics in AI, was interviewed on BBC Radio 4 ‘s Today programme and BBC Radio 5 Live’s Breakfast show, in response to calls by some academics and industry experts for extensive AI regulation.

Speaking on the Today programme, he said “What we all have in common is a need to innovate responsibly, and think about the ethical dimensions that the use of these systems embody” . He went on to say that “We have to understand AI is a huge force for good” and encouraged different voices in the debate on the ‘dark and light’ of the technology. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, he said “We need to have a wide debate with many many different people across society about the risks and benefits (of AI)”.
