In my opinion, the choice of college is really important as this is the place you will spend most of your time here in Oxford. You should not think of a college as only the place where you live, but as a place that is important to your general wellbeing. I had these in mind when I was preparing my applications and after serious consideration, as it was the first time coming to the United Kingdom for studies, I decided that Jesus College was the place for me. I am glad to say that I have not been disappointed. In contrast, I get more and more enthusiastic from the things that I earn from this college every day.
Jesus is physically one of the smaller Colleges of the University of Oxford (but medium-sized in terms of number of students), having a cosy and friendly atmosphere. This fact, jointly with the staff's friendliness, gives you the opportunity to have personal contact with everyone, even with the Principal himself who is always willing to help you and learn about your academic progress. The location of the College could not be more central, providing easy access to the vast majority of the University's libraries and departments. The supermarkets, restaurants, bars, and shops are only a couple of minutes on foot. At this point, I should highlight the fact that accommodation is provided opposite the College for all first year graduate students. In addition, if you are a DPhil student then I would say that accommodation is located either in the city-centre or in flats at one of the College sites in North and East Oxford.
I could not be more satisfied from the quality of the three meals offered every day at very reasonable prices. I have had lunch in many colleges during my time in Oxford and, indeed, I think Jesus offers food of excellent quality. This is not only my personal opinion, but it is something that is recognized by my friends as well, whom I can invite to have meals with me in Jesus as my guests. What is more, the research allowance for graduate students to attend conferences and for other relevant academic purposes is a significant financial boost. It is available for all graduates and is currently £782 per year. In addition, the Governing Body of the College awards a number of Graduate Scholarships worth £900 per annum. The Scholars are entitled to dine at High Table free of charge for eight times in each term.
Last but not least is the spirit of the Middle (Graduate) Common Room (MCR) of the College. Lots of social events, talks, quizzes, and movie nights are organized by the Committee in a cosmopolitan and friendly environment. As a result, the MCR is the absolute place in the College to relax and socialize.
In conclusion, Jesus is the ideal College for me. It takes seriously into account anything that matters to me. At the same time, it offers facilities, accommodation, and meals of very high standards. I am very proud to be a member of Jesus College and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who intends to study at the University of Oxford.

Being a member of a College is one of the things that makes the Oxford experience so special. While as a graduate student I spend a lot of my time in my department, I love being part of the Jesus community. Being a member of the Jesus MCR provided me with an instant group of friends at Oxford as well as the chance to get to know people from a whole range of departments and from around the world. The Jesus MCR is one of the friendliest and most welcoming in Oxford. I love being able to come back to College for lunch during the week, giving me the chance to catch up with other MCR members. The MCR committee organise a wide range of events during term time from guest dinner nights, to wine and cheese events, movie nights and exchange dinners with other colleges.
Living in the Ship Street houses during my first year was great. You'd be hard placed to find more central graduate accommodation in Oxford. It allowed me to get to know the members of the MCR really well and the proximity to College (you are just across the street) meant that I could take full advantage of everything that College and the wider university has to offer. While I no longer live in College accommodation, I am still living in a house full of Jesubites!
I am really grateful of the support that Jesus has given me in my academic and sporting pursuits. The College has generous travel grants for its graduate students to attend conferences and undertake research around the world. They also provide sporting grants for students who play university sport, which is really helpful for covering kit and travel costs. I have also been extremely lucky with my College adviser who has taken me under her wing and introduced me to a whole range of opportunities and experiences as well as offering much support.
Australia - MPhil Social and Economic History
Having been a member of a collegiate university in Australia as an undergraduate, I certainly understood the positive impact that opportunities provided by living in college have upon an overall experience of university.
So, when it came to choosing a college at Oxford, I was keen to join a diverse, exciting and busy academic community. Jesus has been all this and much more. When considering the multitude of colleges that comprise this University, it seems strange that any should stand out from the rest. However, the overwhelming endorsements of life at Jesus provided by family, friends and a variety ex-Jesubites meant that there was only one option for me.
From the first moment that I arrived at Jesus and encountered the friendly welcome of the Lodge staff, it has felt like home. This friendliness is quite rightly seen as one of the College's defining characteristics. Life in the MCR (the social hub for graduates) is similarly welcoming, with many great events organized by the social secretaries in any given week. These include cocktail evenings within the MCR, sporting events and formal graduate dinners in Jesus' beautiful Hall. Sharing outstanding meals with interesting people from a very broad range of academic disciplines and diverse cultural backgrounds is a particular highlight of life at Jesus. The MCR also organizes frequent dinner exchanges with other colleges which are another excellent way to meet graduates from around Oxford, as well as to glimpse some more of the city's amazing architecture.
Jesus is easily the most centrally located of all Oxford colleges. This superb position in the heart of the city makes it easy to access exhibitions at the world-class Ashmolean museum and concerts at the Sheldonian theatre, both of which are only a minute's walk away. Being surrounded by about a dozen entries in the most recent 'Good Pub Guide', as well as the best food and only good coffee in Oxford, are additional bonuses.
While Jesus is an ideal base from which to explore Oxford and to get involved with the vast range of events constantly being organized around the University, there's always a huge amount going on in College itself. Guests from the very top of industry, government, academia and the professions are regularly invited to speak in either the Ship Street Centre or at Evensong in the College Chapel. The Chapel is also home to Jesus' superb choir and organist, who provide regular and welcome diversions from study.
The College provides a great deal of assistance in allowing members of the MCR to become involved in societies and sporting clubs on a University level. For example, although Australian Rules Football might not be a sport intimately associated with the history of the College, generous benefactions allow it to cover most of the expenses incurred in playing for Oxford's footy club.
Jesus is also fortunate to have first-class sporting facilities of its own, located only a few minutes ride from the central site. In keeping with the College's proud Welsh affiliations, the rugby pitch is one of the best in Oxford. In further tribute to the grounds man, the cricket pitch has also been described as a 'batsman's paradise' – which can only help an otherwise struggling Australian journeyman to make some runs.
Aside from the energetic social life that Jesus provides, the College has a strong academic tradition and reputation for excellence. It provides new graduates with multiple levels of support, with one of the most beneficial aspects being the establishment of a relationship with a 'College Advisor' - a senior academic from one's own discipline. This support extends to generous financial assistance, with substantial grants available to all graduates to fund travel for research purposes, which makes data collection and site visits so much easier.
In sum, Jesus is an exceptionally vibrant academic college with a dynamic extracurricular life that allows its members to make the most of their time at Oxford and I hope that you consider joining its MCR.

Inspiring setting and ideal location. Founded in the 16th century by Queen Elizabeth I, Jesus College buildings and quads evoke a sense of nostalgia and romanticism that are so much a part of study at a historic university such as Oxford. A visit to the seventeenth century chapel on a Sunday morning when the choir performs is sure to deliver goose bumps. The neo-Jacobean staircases, proper quad flora, impressive dining hall, and the historic Meyricke Library combine to create a truly inspiring academic setting. What is more, the College is just a short walk from the Sheldonian Theatre, the Bodleian Library, the Ashmolean Museum and the Radcliffe Camera. For transportation purposes, the Oxford Rail Station and the central Gloucester Green Bus Station are both likewise only a couple of minutes away on foot.
Funding and professional development. Critical for graduate students is annual financial support for fieldwork, conference participation, international travel, and book purchases. Jesus College has a reputation for its phenomenal support of graduate student endeavours, both on and off College. During my first year I received several small grants for conference participation, including funds from the Bylaw 6.3 grant that allowed me to invite two renowned scholars in my field to speak at a conference that I organised in the Habakkuk Room at Jesus. The space and the will for such student-led initiatives distinguish Jesus as a space for exceptional learning and professional development within the University.
An international and cohesive student body. Half of the graduate students at the College are international and we represent most of the academic disciplines. The Middle Common Room (MCR) is cohesive, welcoming and active. A major distinction between graduate study in North America and at Oxford is the cross-departmental networking and socialising experiences offered through the college setting. From my conversations with students outside Jesus College, it is clear that the graduate community here is more personal, dynamic and supportive than other colleges in the University.
An encouraging and helpful College staff and faculty. From the Welfare Officer to the Porters to the College Principal, you will find the community at Jesus to be convivial and genuinely interested in student wellbeing. College tutors and Advisers are some of the strongest academics in their fields and welcome one-on-one meetings with students. On a more personal note, the College welfare staff were essential in my locating a childcare provider in a system that seemed intimidating and somewhat obscure to me (as an international student). Emails are always responded to promptly and student concerns and recommendations are taken seriously.
All of these factors combine to ensure that the experiences of graduate students at Jesus College are unforgettable and academically and personally exceptional. If you have the opportunity to join our College community, you will certainly not regret your choice!

This College, one of Oxford's gems, is truly renowned for its friendly and loving atmosphere. It has a great location, storied history, and generous resources. As an American hailiing from a country whose history goes back a mere 300 years, the epicness that is Oxford was initially overwhelming for me. Yet, 'tis the mark of this College and the experience it offers that I've never felt more at home.
Oxford can be a very humbling city. As centuries of history and endless reading lists come crashing down over the course of a hectic Oxford term, the one thing any student could desperately want is a community that is welcoming, progressive, and supportive. Though the College hearkens back to the Elizabethan era in its style and cosiness, its outlook is firmly rooted in the present - a perfect blend of the ancient and modern in Oxford.
As a Jesubite, I have seen the administration almost tripping over themselves in an effort to make all students here feel cared for, with their needs addressed as appropriate. For example, though I am a Muslim, I was heartily encouraged by the College chaplain to use the chapel for my own prayers, which not only made things very convenient for me but also struck a deep chord - I have seldom felt more accepted or welcome than I have here, even though I come from the multicultural mecca that is New York City.
As an MCR welfare officer, I've worked alongside MCR members who gladly sacrifice sleep and study time to plan social events and welfare services for fellow graduates. Though you will soon realize that yes, there can be such a thing as too many wine-and-cheeses, the company at these events will never cease to sparkle. We have several exchange events with other colleges - if only to remind ourselves just how much better our College is than all the others!
Jesus lacks for nothing - and accommodation is included in this. Having stayed in the College's central Ship Street location as well as its housing in leafy North Oxford, I have enjoyed my experiences in both because each Jesus housing site has its own unique things to offer in terms of location, size, and amenities. You've got the soccer (yes, soccer) pitch at Barts, the termly Blues party at Woodstock, and the mind-boggling centrality of College/Ship Street. As a first year in Ship Street, I'd basically roll out of bed and be in the market square - you can't get more convenient than that!
I have never met a Jesus alumnus who was anything less than entirely in love with their experience at Jesus. Perhaps there's something in the water, or more likely it's the amazing people that year in and year out choose to make Jesus College a wonderful place to be. Or maybe it's in the name. You should come and find out...
USA - MPhil Geography
Classes at Oxford are academically quite rigorous and therefore wonderful if you enjoy your discipline, as you'll be surrounded daily by similarly-interested people in your department. Yet, what makes Oxford itself so unique is the college system, of which my experience living at Jesus College has played a crucial role. I originally applied to Jesus due to its rich history and strong support of my field, Human Geography; since then, I have been pleasantly surprised by the consistent warmth and inclusiveness of the College's community during my time here.
Learning in one's department extends to one's college, and vice versa, meaning there's rarely a dull moment. Dinner conversations are stimulating, as you will find yourself sitting next to a wide variety of students from various disciplines who are just as curious and engaged in their own work as you are in yours, and are often both willing to share and are interested in what you do. With so many connections between disciplines there is an amazing opportunity to remain intellectually stimulated and engaged outside of formal work hours.
Yet - at the same time - there exists a strong push towards maintaining a good work-life balance at the College; when you're relaxing outside of your work, you truly do relax. There are a wide variety of activities to take part in through Jesus College whether on your own or in teams. These range from crew to squash, from singing in the choir to running through University parks, to attending the many lectures and presentations that take place around the University and are open to all students.
Jesus College is centrally located in the heart of town, so for many students a bike isn't even necessary - the chance to walk through the streets of Oxford, experiencing the life between the various college walls, is one that becomes woven into the fabric of your day. Within Jesus itself, the College manages to be both personal and cosy in the sense that it becomes your ‘home' during your studies here at the University. The MCR (or, Middle Common Room) takes on the role of a communal living room where post-graduates gather when they want a study break or simply to socialize. This year we have had a fantastic committee that has organized a wide variety of both formal and informal events, ranging from wine and cheese tastings to exchange dinners and balls, as well as ‘geek' nights where selected MCR members present fun aspects of their work over snacks and drinks.
What has surprised me the most has been the amiability of students, administration and staff alike. Jesus College is known as one of the friendliest colleges at Oxford, and since my first day here this reputation has held true.

I chose to study at Oxford because of its reputation in medicine, ranked 1st in both "The Times Good University Guide 2010" and "The Guardian University Guide 2010". Located in the center of town, Jesus College is not only conveniently located near banks, shops, and restaurants, but also the university science area where lectures and labs take place. Jesus College also contains a well-stocked library open 24/7 and hosts various speaker events. Most importantly, our college tutors are always willing to take time to help us out with any work-related or even personal problems during tough times, through e-mail, phone, or extra tutorials.
Jesus College is also unique in that it offers guaranteed accommodation at affordable prices for the entire duration of your course, eliminating the headache of flat-hunting year after year! Furthermore, the college offers 3 meals a day with both meat and vegetarian options, saving you time. Free gym membership including access to the pool and squash courts, along with events organized by the JCR (Junior Common Room) complete the college experience. Lastly, university-wide clubs (e.g. Salsa Society) allows you to pursue any hobbies and as an international student, connect with people from your home country (e.g. Oxford University Hong Kong Society).
It is for these reasons I recommend Jesus College to you.

The collegiate system is one of the main aspects that distinguish Oxford from most of other prestigious universities in world. The college is going to play an important role in your life in Oxford, both academically and socially. As an international student having spent more than a year in Oxford, I can say without doubt that choosing Jesus College was an extremely sensible decision. I would genuinely recommend you to apply to study in this close-knit, friendly and supportive community.
Everyone studying at Jesus would agree that the location of our College is the best among all Oxford colleges. It is situated right at the heart of Oxford, meaning that you can get access to major restaurants, supermarkets and other places you will have to visit regularly such as banks, University libraries and departments, without worrying about distances. You won't be able to realize fully the importance of “being central” until you actually come here!
The friendly and supportive atmosphere at Jesus College impressed me right from the beginning of my application. The College staff and tutors have always been very informative and willing to offer help at any time, in assisting your academic work, giving advice about your future career or addressing personal issues.
Another key strength that makes Jesus College stands out is the policy that guarantees high quality and affordable accommodation to all undergraduate students throughout their course. For those coming to the UK for the first time, renting private accommodation in Oxford involves quite complicated procedures, so it really saves you from the hassle of flat-hunting.
Jesus College also offers a wide range of generous scholarships, awards and other forms of financial assistance to its students. Funds available for cultural, sporting, and travel purposes alone amount to approximately £30,000 per year. There are also subject-specific awards to support your academic studies and vacation grants if you are staying in Oxford over the holidays. Applying for these awards and scholarships is not complicated at all, and students from outside the UK and EU are also eligible.
India - MPhys Physics
I initially chose Jesus College without ever having been to Oxford. My decision was based on the advice that I should choose a college which is fairly central and thus everything is fairly accessible. When I arrived here, I found that that was definitely true for Jesus. But I would like to point out that there were many more reasons to choose Jesus College which I have realised having spent one year over here.
The atmosphere in Jesus is extremely friendly. This is possibly because Jesus, with an annual undergraduate intake of a hundred, is a fairly small and tightly knit community. As an undergraduate at Jesus, you would get to know almost everyone in your year and many in the year above and below you. Despite the relatively small size, we find people from all sorts of background making their way into Jesus College and everyone is welcomed with open arms. There are very good support and welfare mechanisms in place for all students, especially international students.
As a physics student I am very satisfied with the teaching at Jesus College. As a science student, my academic timetable can be roughly divided into three parts – lectures, labs and tutorials. Tutorials are by far the most important means of learning and they are conducted by the college fellows. At Jesus, the professors teaching physics are extremely knowledgeable and very helpful during tutorials. A reflection of that is the traditionally strong performance of Jesus Physicists in the final examinations. There are very good academic resources available to the undergraduate students in Jesus College. The library is very well stocked and it has met all my needs thus far.
Another important reason for choosing Jesus College is the promise of college accommodation for the entire length of your degree. Many colleges in Oxford only offer college accommodation for the first year and students have to face the trouble of finding accommodation in Oxford. Thankfully this is not the case with Jesus. Throughout the course of your degree you would be able to stay on college-owned accommodation and this will also ensure that you are always living with your entire year. Hence not only does this save Jesus students from the trouble of house hunting, it also helps in keeping the college tightly knit.
After a year over here, I have found that times in Oxford can get quite hard with all the stress from academics and the community in your college is one of the most important ways of maintaining your sanity. In this light, the community at Jesus has been very important for me over the year and that is the crux of my sales pitch for Jesus College. I have found my experience at Jesus College extremely rewarding and I hope that this article is able to persuade you to consider it.
