Jesus College has launched a special heritage appeal to raise funds towards the restoration and upgrade of its much-loved Chapel.
Consecrated in 1621, the Chapel is both a site of historical importance and architectural beauty. Over the past four centuries, various alterations and additions have been made to ensure its practicality, and continuation as a place of worship, music making, observance and celebration. Chapel is open to all College members, including alumni, for prayer, and as a place for peace and reflection. It services the Chaplain’s work, and provides a home for the wonderful College Chapel Choir.
In the film below, Jesus students and Chapel staff reflect on what the Chapel means to them.
The College’s plans to restore and update Chapel include replacing the existing lighting in the Sanctuary by installing new uplighters, and an energy efficient LED system to assist the Choir and Chaplain. There is also an urgent need to repair the historic carved oak pews and stonework, and the marble behind the altar. These features need to be treated with historical sensitivity, under the care of skilled craftspeople, and aesthetically rendered to match the originals.
The Chapel Appeal is a special heritage project for Jesus, and will help preserve this beloved space for the benefit of the College community for generations to come.
We are hoping to raise £100,000 in support of this important work. If you would like to make a gift, you can do so here. To learn more about the project, please contact the Development Director, Dr Brittany Wellner James (brittany.wellnerjames@jesus.ox.ac.uk).
