Supporting our students during the COVID-19 pandemic

28 January 2021

The health and wellbeing of everyone in the Jesus College community has been our priority throughout the pandemic, and none more so than our students, who have faced numerous challenges throughout the past year.

Whilst the current situation has equipped us with flexibility for adaptation, Hilary term 2021 is poised to be the most challenging term of the pandemic so far. This term, with a new more infectious virus variant in circulation, we have had to tighten restrictions for our students once again, with a total return to teaching online, the closure of the College library, and a reduction of catering provision. The health of both the Jesus community and the wider Oxford community has been central to our decision making. Only students with special circumstances have been allowed to return to Oxford, and we are critically aware of both the academic and personal implications this has for them. Those unable to return to College will not be charged rent for accommodation during Hilary term, and any student affected by the pandemic, whether living in College accommodation or not, can apply for College welfare or hardship support.

Despite myriad challenges, the pandemic has seen our community at its best. Our students have responded in a measured and mature way to their limited freedom and restricted academic experience. At Jesus we have had very few positive COVID-19 cases amongst our students, which considering the close environment we live and work in, is an admirable achievement and demonstrates the personal responsibility taken by all.

The support shown by all, from staff working on site to alumni and friends, has been so encouraging and has enabled us to act quickly and provide the necessary support to our students.  If you would like to make a gift to the Development Fund or Book Fund, we hope you might consider doing so. A gift of any size is gratefully received, and of real benefit to our students.
