A new documentary series produced by Jesus College alumnus James Goldston (1986, PPE) explores the rollercoaster journey of the social media app Twitter, from its inception in 2006 as a digital tool for global communication to its multi-billion-dollar sale to Elon Musk 16 years later.
Twitter: Breaking the Bird tells the story of the tech entrepreneurs who created the app, its rapid growth, and how the founders’ vision for a ‘digital utopia’ imploded as hate speech and misinformation gradually flooded the platform.
The four-part series, which begins on BBC 2 on Monday 31st March, was co-produced by James’ production company Candle True Stories, and Bitachon365. James was an executive producer on the show. He said, “While capturing the creativity, chaos, and conflicts that shaped the world’s digital town square, this series challenges us to confront one of the most pressing questions of our time: Is there such a thing as too much free speech?”
