We welcome applications from anyone who thinks they can benefit from the opportunities the College offers, and who can meet the necessary standards for admission.
We make every effort to ensure that the admissions process is as fair as possible to applicants from every background and type of school.
Each December, we decide who we will admit for the following year. Requirements for entry vary from subject to subject, and details can be found on the University’s website.
Most of our applicants will be taking A-level examinations, Scottish Highers or Advanced Highers, or International and European Baccalaureates. We are prepared to consider all equivalent qualifications – please contact the Academic Director for advice. Information on the requirements for international qualifications is available on the University’s website.
Most people apply before they take their examinations and we rely on predictions of performance given by their schools. We also welcome applications from candidates after grades are available.
Our standard offers depend on which course you apply for. For more details on standard offers please consult the course admission requirements page on the University’s website. If your performance in your examinations is likely to be at this level, then you are in the range of students we are looking for and should seriously consider applying to us if you like the sound of what we can offer.
Entry to Oxford is extremely competitive: it is, after all, one of the world’s greatest universities. You have to be good to get in, and lots of good people are turned away each year. But more people underestimate their abilities and fail to apply to us than overestimate them.
Talk to your teachers, come and see us if you can, and by all means ask us for a candid opinion on whether it is worth your while applying. The answer will usually be “Yes”. You may still not get in, but if you do not apply you will have even less of a chance!
You are welcome to visit the College on any of our Open Days in the summer or visit for a self-guided tour of the College on a date that is convenient for you (provided the college is open to visitors on the date you plan to visit).
As well as ‘standard’ applicants applying from school or college, we welcome applications from mature students (aged 21 or over at the start of October in their first year) who wish to enter higher education at a later stage.
Just like all other applicants, mature students need to demonstrate academic ability and commitment to study. The application procedure for mature students is the same as for all other students. Once you have decided on which course you would like to apply for, check the course page for the admissions requirements, including any specific grades and subjects required. If you are unsure whether your qualifications meet the entry requirements, please contact the Academic Director to discuss your application.
Further information and guidance for mature students can be found on the University website.
International students play an important part in Jesus College life and as a whole, make up around a third of our student population. Around a fifth of our undergraduates are international.
We welcome students from all over the world, and with around 30 nationalities usually represented, the student community here is diverse and lively! But don’t just listen to us. Here’s what some of our international students say:
“Die meisten Studenten sind so froh, dass sie an Jesus College gekommen sind, weil wir hier in einer eng verbundenen Gemeinschaft leben und studieren, was macht es sehr leicht, gute Freunde zu finden.”
Translation: “Most students are really happy that they came to Jesus College because we live and study in such a tight-knit community here, which makes it really easy to find good friends.”
“Jesus College ci si sente a casa. La gente è sempre felice di vederti e un luogo bello ed accogliente in cui vivere.”
Translation: “Jesus College feels like home. People are always happy to see you & it’s a beautiful & welcoming place to live in.”
The University website has some useful information specifically for international students applying to Oxford.
The deadline to submit your application for undergraduate study via UCAS is 6pm (GMT) on 15 October. Please refer to the University website for detailed information on how to make an application.
All colleges follow the same admissions process, selection criteria and entry requirements as outlined on the University website. You can also find a summary of each course’s entry requirements here.
Admissions tests are required for some courses and are used alongside a range of information to help our tutors assess a candidate’s academic potential and suitability for the course. Full details on admissions tests can be found here.
Some courses require a sample of written work to be submitted as part of their application. The deadline to submit the written work to the college is 10 November. Jesus College applicants will be asked to upload their written work via an online submission portal (details will be sent to all applicants in advance). Further information on written work is published on the University website.
Please refer to the Departmental website for subject-specific advice.
The Tutors have no objection in principle to offering a place to a candidate who wishes to defer entry for a year, provided this intention is made known at the outset. You must apply for deferred entry at the time of application to Oxford: you cannot change your mind after an offer has been made.
You should be aware that applicants who are offered places for deferred entry will generally be among the very strongest of the cohort for their subject, and the College limits its offers of deferred places in order not to disadvantage candidates applying in the following year. In some cases, an applicant for deferred entry may be offered a place for non-deferred entry instead.
Yes – applications are welcome from those who have already completed their A-Levels or equivalent. Post-A-level candidates should meet or exceed the same grades and entrance requirements as pre-A-level candidates (AAA-A*A*A dependent upon subject). Post-A-Level applications are assessed using the same procedures as for pre-A-level candidates.
You are welcome to reapply to Oxford but you are advised to apply to a different college. You should consider the other offers you hold and balance this against taking an extra year to re-apply. Some candidates do get an offer from Oxford second-time around, whilst others do not. Reapplying does not make a subsequent offer either more or less likely: you would be assessed against the same criteria as this year, and in the context of the rest of next year’s applicant cohort. But given there are no guarantees of success second-time around, you need to consider how you would feel if you were to be unsuccessful again.
Jesus College does not accept applications for visiting undergraduate students. You can find further information on applying to be a visiting student, including which colleges accept Visiting Students, here: Visiting Students | University of Oxford
