Former Jesus College students become new MPs

Two Jesus College alumni, who both matriculated in 2010, will be taking their seats in the House of Commons this week as new Labour MPs.

Following the General Election on Thursday 4th July 2024, Sarah Coombes (2010, History & Politics) has been elected MP for West Bromwich, and Tom Rutland (2010, PPE) becomes MP for East Worthing and Shoreham.

Before becoming an MP, Sarah worked for an environmental charity, and had previously worked as Head of Policy and Communications for Tom Watson – former West Bromwich MP and now The Lord Watson of Wyre Forest – and as an advisor to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. Tom was previously a councillor for Streatham Common and Vale ward on Lambeth Borough Council, and had worked as a Public Affairs Officer at Imperial College London, as well as at the Financial Conduct Authority and Prospect trade union. During his time at Jesus, Tom was JCR President, and subsequently became President of the Oxford University Student Union.

We extend our congratulations to both former Jesus students, and wish them all the best in their political careers.
