Cheng Yu Tung Building shortlisted for RIBA South Awards 2024

26 February 2024

Jesus College’s Cheng Yu Tung Building has been shortlisted for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) South Awards 2024.

The prestigious RIBA Awards champion and celebrate the best architecture in the UK and around the world, no matter the form, size or budget. They are judged by award-winning architects and peers. Successful projects reflect changes and innovations in architecture, but at their core display a commitment to designing and developing buildings and spaces for the improvement and enhancement of people’s lives.

The Cheng Yu Tung Building was designed by MICA Architects – an international award-winning architectural design practice – and opened in 2022 following a three-year £40m programme which saw the removal of the old Northgate House adjacent to the College’s historic Oxford site, and construction of the new five storey multipurpose development.

The building combines graduate facilities, indoor and outdoor communal spaces, a café and new fourth quad, state-of-the-art teaching and meeting facilities, and the Cheng Kar Shun Digital Hub. The Digital Hub is a tiered forum centred on an open plan atrium that not only provides a convening space for the College, but also a new venue for conferences, events and exhibitions for Oxford. Above its entrance on Market Street, the Hub’s gatehouse is topped by the new Buchanan Tower Room, which houses the Rosaline Wong Gallery, and enjoys striking views across the famous city skyline. In addition, the new building is home to the NHS Northgate Health Centre, and new retail units on the Cornmarket aspect.

RIBA Regional Awards judging takes place in March and April, with juries assessing design excellence irrespective of style, size or complexity, taking into account constraints of budget, brief and timetable while being sensitive to the economic and social contexts of each shortlisted project. The Regional Awards winners will be announced in May, and the RIBA National Awards will be announced in July.
