A month ago, Jesus College launched an appeal seeking support for the creation of a new undergraduate bursary for Classics, named after Dr Don Fowler who was Fellow and Tutor in Classics between 1981 and 1999. Since then, alumni, friends and former colleagues of Don have raised £50,000, placing us halfway to our ambitious goal of £100,000 to endow the bursary in perpetuity.

We are so grateful for the remarkable support given towards this Bursary in such a short period of time, affirming Don’s academic legacy and the importance of Classics at Oxford today. It was apparent from the launch dinner in College that the subject continues to be a vibrant and wide-ranging discipline. A sincere thank you to all those who have already generously supported the appeal to help us reach this remarkable halfway milestone!

Oxford boasts one of the biggest Classics departments in the world, and at Jesus we benefit from the exceptional guidance of leading academics and teachers who are wholly dedicated to their students’ success. Initiatives at Jesus such as ‘Active Latin’, introduced by Dr Melinda Letts, have transformed how language teaching is conducted in the classroom. Support for this bursary will help ensure that Classics remains an appealing and accessible subject for all who wish to study at Jesus, regardless of their background or financial circumstances.
The Don Fowler Bursary will be means-tested according to College’s hardship criteria and qualifying students will receive it in addition to College’s Access Bursary provision.
