Students and alumni help launch Jesus College Sports and Wellbeing Appeal

30 January 2024

Jesus College has launched a new appeal to raise funds towards sporting and wellbeing initiatives.

The appeal aims to raise £125k for the creation of a new gym in the Cheng Yu Tung Building, a refurbishment of the Jesus College Boat House, and the much-needed restoration of the College’s sports grounds and tennis courts at Barts.

Sport and exercise have played a significant role in the lives of Jesus students for generations, both at a competitive and non-competitive level. In addition to benefiting physical health, these activities also support mental health and wellbeing. Going forward, we want to ensure that current and future students can enjoy exercising using high-quality equipment in the best and safest environment possible, and support their overall wellbeing by providing facilities that encourage participation and teamwork.

In a new video to accompany the appeal, students Gabby and Tom talk about what sport and wellbeing mean to them.

Also lending their support to the appeal are many College alumni, who have kindly shared their memories of participating in sports during their time at Jesus, and the positive impact it had on their Oxford experience, friendships and lives after university.

There are tales of success and misadventure on the Cherwell (and the crab that got in the way), fond recollections from former football players, boxers and archers, and the story of how the first women students at Jesus ‘tackled’ their way into the various sports clubs back in 1974.
