Ukrainian student thanks College community for life-changing scholarship

19 July 2023

Jesus College is proud to be participating in Oxford’s Ukraine Student Support Programme for a second year, and hugely grateful for the incredible support this programme has received so far from across our community.

We now hope to raise a final £10,000 to close the gap on two consecutive graduate scholarships that will allow enough funds to support the programme through the 2025-26 academic year.

The College first launched the Ukrainian Student Support Fund (USSF) in May 2022, in partnership with the University of Oxford’s initiative to support students affected by the on-going war in the Ukraine. Thanks to the huge generosity of students, staff, alumni and friends, the USFF enabled Jesus to welcome Ukrainian graduate student Georgii, who has been studying for a one-year Master’s in the Study of Religion over the past year.

In a new film, produced to raise awareness of this year’s USSF appeal, Georgii talks about his experience of coming to Oxford and studying at Jesus, and of his gratitude to all those who have supported the Fund. He says,

“I would like to thank our alumni and fellow College students, as well as anyone else who contributed to this scholarship for their support and kindness, for it allows me to continue my studies and, in the long term, to help my country to establish values of democracy and freedom on a firm foundation.”

Dr Brittany Wellner-James, Director of Development, says “The appeal to raise £25,000 for two consecutive graduate scholarships at Jesus began in March 2023, and the College community has once again demonstrated its generosity and commitment to supporting students in need by raising £15k towards this aim so far. This last push towards our target will allow us to support more students like Georgii over the next two years.”

The College, together with the University, will continue its commitment to offer free accommodation and meals within College, a living stipend, and course fees for each student. Applicants will have the opportunity to apply for full-time, one-year courses in a broad range of subjects.
