Arthur Nortje & Me: A Reflection on Exile

In March, College was delighted to welcome Athol Williams, poet, social philosopher and Lecturer at the Said Business School, to give a talk on the life of Jesus alumnus and poet Arthur Nortje (1965, English Literature), and how he has been an inspiration in Williams’s own life and struggles.

International Food Night - Japan

January 2024


On Wednesday 30th January, College members enjoyed an International Food Night celebrating the cuisine of Japan. The Catering Team produced an impressive menu of Japanese dishes, including miso soup, egg sushi, yakitori chicken, daikon salad, nasu dengaku and matcha anmitsu, all washed down with a (small) glass of saki.

Hall was decorated with Japanese flags, and each table setting came with a beautiful origami bird created by staff member Violeta Budrevicuite.

 

College rooms renamed to celebrate diversity

January 2024


Jesus alumni Norman Washington Manley (1914, Law) and Pixley ka Isaka Seme (1906, Law) have had College meeting rooms named in their honour, following proposals from the JCR and MCR to diversify the naming of College spaces.

Upcoming talk: Can Patriotism be Inclusive?

Tuesday 14th November


The Equality and Diversity Committee will be hosting a talk ‘Can Patriotism be Inclusive?’ by Jesus alumnus Sunder Katwala (PPE, 1992), followed by a Q&A session and drinks reception.

Admissions Report 2023

The University of Oxford Annual Admissions Statistical Report draws together data about undergraduate admissions for the University as a whole, and for individual colleges and subjects.

The University publishes this information to increase transparency around the makeup of the undergraduate body at Oxford, and to inform and engage people about who studies at Oxford and where they come from. A summary of the report is available on the University website here.

Jesus College welcomes this latest report, and its publication provides us with an opportunity to give an update on the progress we are making towards further diversifying the student body.

Comedian supports Men's Health Week in College

Markus Birdman, one of British comedy’s most experienced and well-travelled performers, is to bring his show to Jesus College Oxford, as part of Men’s Health Week 2023.

International Women’s Day Comedy Night

March 2023


The Equality & Diversity Committee is hosting an evening of comedy in celebration of International Women’s Day 

Vidya Divakaran is a young comedian on the London circuit, and describes her style as upbeat, personal and zany. Her show – Veni Vidi Vidya – focuses on the importance of her friendships, going from an all-girls high school in East London, to the heights of the Cambridge bubble, and her return to London where she found herself living with her parents once again. With musings on identity, dating as a brown woman, and internet culture, Vidya’s show also includes music and audience engagement.

Bradley Wilson Scholarship in Geography and the Environment

The School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE) in partnership with Jesus College and supported by the generosity of Geography alumni Bradley Wilson (1967) and Rodney Wright (1962), is excited to offer a fully-funded Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil/PhD) scholarship for UK-resident applicants from Black and other minority ethnic backgrounds.

Jesus alumna launches new charity to support women and girls in crisis

March 2021


We are proud to share the news of a new charity, the Bexceptional Foundation, which is the brainchild of Jesus College alumna Bex Hall (2010, Geography).

The Bexceptional Foundation exists to empower women and promote their wellbeing and confidence. The Foundation has three goals: to educate women on self-confidence, their rights, and their worth; to protect and support women in difficult relationships or situations; and to empower and enable women to live the life they deserve.

College launches first bursary for black British students

February 2021


Jesus College is delighted to announce the establishment of its first bursary that specifically supports Black British students.

The Joan Erene Corine Martindale Clarke and Lionel Da Costa Clarke Scholarship will be used to support an undergraduate student (in any subject) who identifies as ‘Black British’ for the duration of their course.
