It was Coke, a politician and lawyer, who, in 1605, prosecuted Guy Fawkes and his Gunpowder Plot co-conspirators for treason. Alex was joined on the show by Jesse Norman MP and presenter Ian Hislop, who discussed Coke’s rise to become Attorney General in 1594, his great rivalry with Francis Bacon, his most well-known prosecutions, and the impact of his successful but often controversial legal career on the law today.

The podcast is available to listen to on BBC Sounds here.
